Gravitational potential energy is can simply be described as how far down you’ll fall. 1 isn’t changing at all. 2 and 3 are increasing. In 4, the boy is returning to the ground. He’s spending all of his gravitational potential energy and therefore decreasing how much he has.

    Let me explain
For a girl stretching a horizontal spring, the fact that the spring is horizontal and is not moving away from Earth keeps an equal gravitational potential energy.
For a bicyclist riding up a steep hill, because you are moving further away from the Earth, there is a larger gravitational potential energy because you can fall further if you were in the air.
For a rocket rising vertically from the Earth, same as above.
Now a boy jumping down from a tree is getting closer to the Earth, so his gravitational potential decreases.

Answer is 4 – boy jumping down from a tree. Gravitational potential energy is being lost, and converted to kinetic energy as the boys velocity increases, heading for the ground, faster and faster… OMG SPLAT!!!! Too bad – so sad.
