Neglecting Energy Absorbed Or Reflected By Earth’s Atmosphere, The Solar Energy …..?
Neglecting energy absorbed or reflected by Earth’s atmosphere, the solar energy hitting 1 square meter of Earth’s surface is 1360 J/s (the solar constant). How long does it take a baseball diamond (90 ft on a side) to receive 1 megaton of solar energy? (Hint: A 1 megaton bomb produces about 4 x 10^15 J.)
____________years?

I can’t remember the formula for calculating the area of a diamond. But if you can, you can work it out from this. One square foot is 0.0929 m^2. So neglecting the solar energy absorbed by the atmosphere, a square foot absorbs this times 1360 J/s (watts), which is 126.3 watts. At this rate it would take 4×10^15/126.3=3.17 x 10^13 seconds to absorb 1 megaton of solar energy. Divide this number of seconds by the area of a baseball diamond in sq. ft. and convert into years and you’ve got your answer.
